Player Biographies
Violinist Sun Yi attended the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in China, where he has garnered much acclaim as a solo, chamber, and orchestral violinist. A major prize-winner in the China Nationwide Violin Competition, he was engaged as the Concert Master of the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra soon after completing his studies in China. As the leader of the Orient String Quartet he toured Europe and Asia before coming to Australia to study for a Master of Music with Alice Waten and Carl Pini. Sun Yi was the Associate Concertmaster of the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, and is currently the Associate Concert Master of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
Pianist Brenda Jones enjoys a diverse career as a chamber musician, solo pianist, and teacher. After completing a Bachelors and Masters of Music from the University of Southern California with John Perry, she was awarded a fellowship to study with Joan Havill at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Brenda was a top prizewinner in the 2003 Dublin International Piano Competition and a Semi-Finalist in the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2004. As a soloist and chamber musician, Brenda has toured Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Spain, Ireland, and throughout the USA before moving to Sydney in 2005.
Cellist Patrick Murphy studied with Gregory Baron, Michael Goldschlager and Alexander Ivashkin. A seasoned chamber musician, Patrick was the winner of the Fourth Osaka Chamber Music Competition in 2001 as a member of the Tankstream Quartet. In 2004 he was invited to play at the wedding of Denmark's Crown Prince Frederick and Princess Mary Donaldson in Fredensborg Castle, Copenhagen. Patrick has played with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra and the Hong Kong Sinfonietta as guest principal cellist. Patrick is also an active solo performer as well as a member of the Grainger Quartet.
